The jet stream is a narrow band of strong winds flowing high above the Earth in the upper atmosphere, typically between 8 and 15 kilometres above the surface. These winds move from west to east and can reach speeds of over 300 kilometres per hour.

There are several jet streams around the planet, but the two most important are:

•The Polar Jet Stream

•The Subtropical Jet Stream

The polar jet stream has the greatest influence on weather patterns in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.
